New Microsoft vs Apple Ads
Microsoft rolled out the first ad of its new campaign, called “Laptop Hunters”. This new video clip is the next round of the ever prevalent Mac versus PC debate.
See the ad for yourself:
So what do you think? Is Microsoft’s next attempt at keeping PC users from buying a Mac effective? The buzz around the internet seems to say that this ad is working much better than the previous “I’m a PC” campaign, or the bizarre Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld commercials. That’s not saying a whole lot, but I do see a major problem with this new ad as well.
The entire premise of the commercial states that Lauren’s first choice is a Mac. But, with a trip to the Mac store, Lauren realizes that most all MacBooks cost more than $1,000. This basically reinforces the notion that Macs are superior products, and Lauren would buy one if she could. This is like going to a fancy restaurant and trying to find something on the menu for less than $5. You know the food will be great at the nice restaurant, but instead you have to drive across town and settle for Burger King. I know the economy is tough right now and Microsoft is trying to capitalize on that point, but they could have framed the argument differently.
Maybe if Lauren saved for a few more weeks she could buy the Mac, instead of having to “settle” for a PC…
I also stumbled across this parody on the differences between Apple and Microsoft packaging on YouTube. The video is a couple years old, but still hilarious. It’s even funnier once you realize it was created by someone from inside Microsoft!
