iPhone App Store to Hit 1 Billion Downloads

This morning, Apple announced that the iPhone App Store is about to hit 1 billion software downloads by users around the world. To celebrate this milestone, Apple is giving away a prize package to one lucky App Store user. To enter this contest, all you have to do is download any app to your iPhone or iPod Touch before the countdown on Apple’s website reaches the 1 billion mark. The prize pack includes a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod Touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro.

iTunes App Store Billion Countdown

This is an amazing statistic, considering the App Store has been running for less than a year. The iTunes App Store passed the 500 million download mark on January 16th, less than 3 months ago. That means the rate of downloading is increasing at a rapid pace. It took right around 6 months to reach 500 million, and only half that time to reach another 500 million downloads. Looking at the counter on Apple’s website, the rate of downloads is right around 40 apps per second! All of this is fueled by an ever-expanding catalog of fresh apps that is currently over the 25,000 mark.

I reported on the new BlackBerry App World last week, and now more than ever, the iPhone App Store is simply dominating the mobile software market.
