Reuters reported today that a Rhode Island federal court jury ruled in favor Uniloc Inc in their patent infringement case against Microsoft. Uniloc, a maker of anti-piracy software, claimed the software giant infringed on its patented software security technology.
This issue arose in 2003, when Microsoft supposedly used their software technology in its Windows XP licensing verification software. After six long years of legal battles, Uniloc emerged victorious with one of the largest patent law infringement awards in US history.
Microsoft plans to fight the decision and a spokeman for the company said, “We will ask the court to overturn the verdict.”
Wall Street doesn’t seem too worried about the lawsuit; shares of Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) climed 2.40% on the day. Maybe the market thinks this case will get tossed out on appeal?
