Microsoft Surface – New Features

The incredibly cool Microsoft Surface is officially moving along as a legitimate consumer product, complete with its first software update, Surface Service Pack 1. CrunchGear reports on this new software update in a post from this morning, complete with a cool video showing how some of the new features work.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, the Microsoft Surface is an incredible touch screen PC that acts as an interactive table. It is an intuitive multi-touch display that is designed to make computing a fun, social experience. It also has image capturing technology that allows it to recognize and interact with objects that are placed on it. This is not some fancy movie trick in the latest Bond movie; Microsoft Surface is here, and its being used all over the country, right now.

The video below, from CrunchGear, gives a brief demonstration of the latest cool features to be introduced on the Microsoft Surface.

Microsoft Surface is so revolutionary because it not only responds to multiple user inputs via touch, but it contains five cameras that allow it to interact with objects and devices. Multiple users can grab and manipulate different digital data at the same time. Unique tags attached to objects allow it to respond to different objects in a unique way.

The current version of Microsoft Surface is a 30-inch display mounted in a table, which encourages group interaction. They are presently being used in hotels as virtual concierge services, in bars as an entertainment and social device, as a unique shopping experience at retail stores, and much more. Currently, Microsoft Surface is only available for commercial purchases. However, their plan is to make Microsoft Surface available to the home user in the near future.

Check out Microsoft’s own Surface video for a glimpse at what’s to come.

I wonder how much this is going to cost when it finally goes mainstream (and how long that’s going to take). That’s awesome!
