Symantec’s Quick Guide to Scary Internet Stuff

Ran across this video by Symantec explaining what botnets are and how they work. The explanations used in this video are fairly basic, but it is still entertaining and worth watching.

The recent over-hyped Conficker virus scare was an example of a botnet scare that caught the world’s attention, even though it hasn’t yet materialized into a large threat. For 2008, Symantec reported that every single day, an average of 75,000 botnet or “zombie” computers were active across the globe. These zombie computers are responsible for sending over 90% of all email spam.
