“The State of Apps” Software Usage Report by Wakoopa

wakoopa-logoI just came across a relatively new social networking site called Wakoopa that is specifically designed to track your software usage and help you discover the cool new software that everyone is using. Once you sign up, Wakoopa tracks your software usage so you can see how you manage your time both across the web and with different software applications.

Wakoopa then processes all of this usage data to compile list of the most used software, game, and web apps across the globe. It’s a great way to stay on top of current trends and discover great new software. Like any other social networking site, you can make friends on Wakoopa to share your software profile with. It’s all in an attempt to stay on top of what’s hot right now.

At the end of last month, Wakoopa released the first of its The State of Apps quarterly reports that combines all of this user data into interesting trend statistics. Since the beginning of Wakoopa, they’ve gathered over 525 million hours of software usage data from some 75,000 users. With the average computer containing 54 software titles, that is truly a lot of software usage statistics.

While it is true that the average Wakoopa user tends to be on the geekier side of the computer user spectrum, their findings in The State of Apps report are still very interesting. One of the most glaring statistics for those of us in the software industry is the fact that 31% of users report that they are spending less on software due to the economic downturn as of late.

For Windows and Mac users, the most popular piece of software is Firefox with a commanding lead over any other application. For Windows users, Firefox took up almost 30% of all PC usage time. Google Chrome came in second with about 6% of total usage. Some other applications in the top ten for Windows users are Word (#7), Outlook (#8), World of Warcraft (#9), and Internet Explorer (#3).

For web application usage, Facebook takes up the most user time with over 14% of all web time spent on the site. The next four most used web applications are all owned by Google: Gmail, YouTube, Google Search, and Google Reader. Of particular note in the web application statistics is the recent rise of Twitter, which comes in at the 6th most popular website among Wakoopa users.
