Yesterday we had the pleasure of meeting the folks from DeLorme at the Outdoor Retailer Show that is in our stomping grounds; Salt Lake City this week. You might be asking yourself why Software News Daily was at the Outdoor Retailer show, and why we are reviewing GPS units. Well for one living in Utah we love all things outdoors, and DeLorme happens to make some of the best mapping software on the earth (of earth, too!). We meandered on over to the Salt Palace yesterday to meet with Chip from DeLorme who was kind enough to show us around their newest product the PN-60W.
DeLorme’s Earthmate PN-60W
The PN-60W is one of the coolest handheld GPS units I have seen recently. First of all it’s a great GPS coupled with DeLorme’s awesome maps right off the bat you have a great product. This picks up where DeLorme’s last models have left off with GPX support meaning you import and export a lot of different data, including Geo-Caches, Trails, and More. I like to use GPX files to let friends know about Back country spots I know about, and to save the ones I find out about while I am out skiing. Being able to export with GPX to google earth and other programs like that is something I see as very beneficial.
SPOT Technology
Hands down, the coolest feature of the PN-60W is it’s communication capabilities. The PN-60W comes packaged with a SPOT communicator, meaning that you can send messages from your GPS unit, ANYWHERE. As long as you are outdoors the SPOT communicator can work. We figured it would be better to show you how it works versus explaining it so check out the demo (coming soon!) with Chip from DeLorme below, and don’t forget to buy a PN-60w today!
