Office 2011 on it’s way to Macs

Yesterday Microsoft began rolling out behind the scenes videos on the next release of Office for Mac. Many of the new features that will be included sound similar to those in Office 2010, so we are looking forward to a great Office experience regardless of which operating system we use. Otherwise right now Microsoft is pushing new features that will improve efficiency. Most notably however is the release of Outlook for Mac (finally), this is awesome news. We will be sure to keep you updated on all news Office 2011 from beta’s to feature spotlights. In the meantime check out the video from Microsoft below and read their Office 2011 announcement.

VMWare Fusion: Windows 7 on Your Mac

Recently I have had the pleasure of learning a lot more about Visualization and it’s benefits to IT Departments. My question however was how can Virtualization help me? The answer was actually quite easy. For my own personal use I have a Mac Book Pro, running OS X, my co-workers explained to me that with a Virtual Machine running I could use Windows 7 and Mac OS X using a program called VMWare Fusion 3. The last time I had tried to run windows on a PC was quite a few years back and initially I was quite hesitant to try using a virtual machine again. Even with my woes everyone convinced me to give VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 a whirl on my Mac.

I was surprised right off the bat, Fusion was a breeze to install, and even easier was installing Windows 7. I entered in my license key, and within 30 minutes a copy of Windows 7 was on my Mac. Even cooler my same desktop from my Mac was right there on Windows, my CD/DVD Drive worked, and I was connected to the internet. I didn’t have to setup anything! Windows 7 runs great on my MacBook Pro and I can use pretty much any software I need on my laptop now. If you are considering installing Windows 7 I would absolutely recommend installing it with VMWare Fusion.

Use AutoCAD More Efficiently with Windows 7

AutoCAD LT 2011 is an awesome option for those who work with CAD who don’t need everything the full version of AutoCAD offers. If you are using the AutoCAD LT 2011 and Windows 7 together you are getting the best experience possible while working with the program. Today we will explore Seven Tips for getting the most out of AutoCAD 2011 and Windows 7.

1. Use thumbnail previews to navigate between open DWG files

Quickly locate and switch between open AutoCAD LT 2011 drawing files by hovering your cursor over the taskbar icon to display thumbnail images of each open drawing. Switch between drawings by clicking on thumbnails, or use the red “X” to quickly close a file from the thumbnail.

2. Access recent work with jump lists

Right-click on a program icon in the taskbar to display a jump list of your ten most recently-opened files. Open an item on the list simply by clicking on it, or drag-and-drop files to attach them to e-mails or copy them to a different folder. Use the pushpin icon to make sure that important files always stay on the list. Jump lists are also available for your frequently-used programs in the Start menu.

3. Pin your favorite programs for easy access

Pin AutoCAD LT and other programs you use on a regular basis to the taskbar with the option in the right-click menu, and launch them with a single click.

You can also store favorite programs on the Start menu. While your most frequently-used programs will show up there automatically, you can keep them there permanently by right-clicking on the program and selecting “Pin to Start Menu.”

4. Quickly resize program windows with Snap

Use Snap to display two programs side-by-side on your screen, without overlap, simply by dragging one window to the left of the screen and the other to the right. Easily reference your email, spreadsheet or other program while working in AutoCAD LT 2011. Drag a single program to the top of the screen to have it fill your entire display.

5. Find files faster with Instant Search

Search is faster in Windows 7—libraries and other popular file locations are indexed so results appear as soon as you type in the first few letters of your keyword, whether in the Start menu or in the search box available in every Windows Explorer window. To make your search even more efficient, matching files and folders are grouped by category, and keywords are highlighted to make the list even easier to scan. Filter your results by type, date, size, or author to further narrow your search.

6. Safeguard your work with Backup and Restore

No matter how much care you take with your files, accidents can happen—drives can fail, files can become corrupted, and “copy” can even become “delete.” That’s when you need Windows Backup to store copies of your important files on an external drive and update them periodically so they’re as current as possible.

When you need to retrieve a file, the Restore function lets you select the entire backup file or specific files and folders. You can even specify whether to restore files to their original location or a new one.

7. Manage default printers with Location Aware Printing

When you run AutoCAD LT on a laptop, you can take your computer with you, but chances are you leave your printers behind. With Location Aware Printing, you can set a different default printer for every network you connect to. Then, when you change networks, Windows automatically sends documents to the correct printer.

HTML5; the term has been thrown around all over the place. You might be wondering what HTML5 even is, and what it means for the internet. Hopefully we can address some of your concerns, and by the time you are done reading this article you will have an idea of what all this HTML5 stuff means.

In a nutshell HTML5 is a new way of adding multimedia to websites without the need for additional plug-ins (for example Flash.)

Slicer in Excel

Slicer is a new feature in Excel that gives users a new way to control the way they view data. Slicer allows you to filter data from your sheet and view it in a pivot table. Once your data is in a pivot table it is possible to sort through your data to view only the info you need.

Better tools for Handling Video in PowerPoint

PowerPoint now offers new tools that let you add all sorts of videos to your slide shows. You can now add videos from your favorite video sharing websites, by copy and pasting the embed code from the site, and the video ends up in your presentation. You can also import videos to your presentation from your hard drive. Once a video is added to your presentation, PowerPoint provides you with a lot of features for editing your video. This saves a lot of time and hassle, and makes adding videos to your Slide Show a breeze.

Remove Background Tool in Word

Office 2010 offers a lot of new tools that make creating documents a lot easier. In Word new photo editing features are introduced. The coolest new feature is the remove background feature that automatically removes the background of an image when you select the general area of you want without a background. In the example below I was able to isolate the Real Salt Lake logo from its background and get a new version of the logo with just a few clicks. This saves tons of time, and eliminates the need for using additional programs to get the image you need.
