In this Microsoft Word 2010 tutorial, Kyle gives us an introductory look at the “Ribbon” that has replaced the traditional toolbar in Microsoft Office.

Video Transcript

Hello and welcome back to SoftwareMedia TV. My name is Kyle, and today I’m going to be taking you through a quick, introductory look at Microsoft Word.

One of the biggest changes that you’re going to notice between Word 2003 and Word 2010 is what’s called the “Ribbon.” Now, instead of having drop-down menus like file, edit, window… you’re going to have various tabs that include all of your formatting and tools, right here for quick access.

So, first of all, is the File tab. This is where you’re going to do all of your saving, opening of documents, closing, info, recent documents that you’ve worked on, creating new documents, printing, and your help option is in here, too.

Next, you’ve got your Home tab. This is probably the most commonly used tab. It incorporates all of the text formatting. So all of your fonts, font sizes, text format, strike-throughs, changing the sizes, colors, paragraph formatting… everything like that is going to be here on the Home tab.

Next, you have got the Insert tab. This is where you are going to put in your pictures… that’s my dog Riley. This is where you can insert pictures, clip art, hyperlinks, bookmarks, cross-referencing, headers, footers… everything like that will be done in the Insert tab.

Then, you’ve got Page Layout. This is where you can put in page colors. You can adjust the margins, page orientation (whether it’s landscape or portrait), page size, columns, line breaks, watermarks. Everything is done in the Page Layout tab.

Then References. You can add text, update tables, table of contents, you can insert footnotes and endnotes, insert captions, insert your citations and bibliography, all in the References tab.

Then you have your Mailings tab. Now this tab helps you to create documents when sending out mailings like printing out envelopes, labels, processing mail merges. You can set your recipients. You can do it all through Outlook as well.

Next you’ve got your Review tab. This is where you’re going to find SpellCheck, researching, word count, translating… it’s really cool that you can translate right here in Word, and not have to copy and paste into Google Translate.

And then you’ve got your View tab, which is where you’re going to change the way you’re looking at your document. You can zoom in and out, you can set it to one or two pages, you can adjust your page width, you can open new windows, you can set macros. This is all done in View.

So, that is the Ribbon in Microsoft Word 2010. In our next tutorial we are going to look at getting started, so stay tuned here at SoftwareMedia.com

Between hacktivists, anti-trust litigation, software subscriptions and Final Cut Pro X (hahahahaha), we thought we’d seen it all. That was, of course, until earlier this week when our Adobe contact informed us that the makers of such beloved creative software as Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects would be making drastic -and, to some, infuriating- changes to their current pricing models.

For years, Adobe has had a “three versions back” upgrade model, meaning that anyone using a Creative Suite that was less than three versions out of date would receive discounted prices when upgrading. Well, say goodbye to that, because as of next year, with the scheduled Adobe CS6 release, Adobe Systems Incorporated will require that anyone wishing to receive upgrade pricing own the latest version of the software. In other words, individuals using copies of CS5 or CS5.5 will still be eligible for discounts when upgrading to CS6, however anyone using CS4 or earlier will be forced to pay full price for the latest release.

Considering that a large portion of Adobe’s (notably loyal) user base tends to remain at least one or two versions behind in order to keep costs low, this move could seem to some to be a betrayal of those very same customers who made the company what it is today. Despite an overwhelmingly negative response, however, Adobe seems unlikely to revert to the original upgrade model, pushing instead for customers to pay a monthly fee for the Creative Suite Subscription Editions or the newly announced Adobe Creative Cloud.

While many Adobe customers may be angered (or at least a bit irritated) by Adobe’s restructuring of the Creative Suite upgrade pricing, the outrage is seemingly not unanimous. Some have argued that the change is not entirely without merit, speculating that the move will create an incentive for users to stay current with their creative software and discourage people from straggling two or three versions behind the industry standard. As anyone who has done creative collaboration knows, trying to send a CS5 file to a CS3 user ranges somewhere between frustrating and cataclysmically stressful.

This move by Adobe, whether a change for good or ill, will definitely affect people where it hurts the most: the wallet. So, to help alleviate the possible financial burdens that Creative Suite users may be facing in the future, SoftwareMedia.com has dropped their prices on Adobe CS5.5 upgrades to more than 20% off, which is lower even than Adobe’s advertised discounts. We urge CS users one and all to make the upgrade before CS6 is released and avoid the inevitably pricey full-cost CS6 license.

Save now... save more later!

Kyle here again from SoftwareMedia TV. Last time I showed you how to create a custom brush in Illustrator, and today I am going show you how to do the same thing in Photoshop.

What you want to do is you want to start with an image. It can be an image you import into Photoshop or something you draw. I’m going to do a little squiggly line.

Then, using any selection tool (it can be anything… it can be the magic wand, the lasso or the marquee, it doesn’t matter) select your image.

Go to edit > define brush preset. And you can name it whatever you want. I am going to call it “SoftwareMedia TV.” Hit “Enter” and it will show up in your brush presets. Deselect, and grab the paintbrush tool, and here’s your brush.

You can edit the parameters by going into the brush panel, and you can add noise, smoothing, anything you want, it’s really all up to you. You can do whatever you want with this brush.

It’s a really awesome tool, so go forth and experiment.

Hey everybody, Kyle here again from SoftwareMedia TV. Today, I’m going to show you how to make a custom brush in Adobe Illustrator.

So, what you want to do first is you want to select any one of these tools and make a shape of any kind. In the spirit of Halloween, I am going to make a Cthulhu shape, and that is going to be our brush.

Alright, draw a little octopus head, some eyes, wings… there you go.

And then, while you have your shape selected, go over to your brush palette , select “new brush”, “art brush”. And there’s a bunch of parameters here that you can change to get your brush exactly how you want it. Once you have everything selected, hit “ok”.

We can just delete this.

Go over to our paintbrush tool, make sure you’ve got your custom brush selected… and there you go. You have a brand-new, scary Cthulhu brush.

Ia Cthulhu.

Happy halloween, from SoftwareMedia.com

PitStop Pro 10 is a plug-in that is designed to solve the problems experienced with Adobe Acrobat. For a publisher or a printing press this application is a must have. Learn about some of the real-world use features in this article.

PitStop Pro 10 is a plug-in that is designed to solve the problems experienced with Adobe Acrobat. For a publisher or a printing press this application is a must have. It has redefined efficiency in the printing industry. Imagine you have just finished reviewing a book in PDF format then you realize that you did not put a logo and a page number in the footer section of all the pages. On a normal process, the PDF file would require you to put these omissions page by page. However, with PitStop Pro 10, the Global Changes application enables you to apply these changes in seconds. Global changes is customized to ensure that the editor can fix page numbers, cover pages, stamps and logos on the entire document regardless of the number of pages it has. Other editing features that PitStop Pro 10 offers include editing texts, scaling and rotating pages.

Global Changes is just one of the many applications that this Adobe Acrobat plug-in has designed. Another thing that had been missing in professional publishing was a troubleshooter for PDF errors. Enfocus PitStop Pro has a preflight engine which detects problems like missing font and colors as well as showing the objects that don’t have bleed. This preflight engine gives a report showing all the problems that it has detected in the PDF files.

One of the favorite PitStop Pro 10 features in professional printing environments is the workgroup manager. This is a feature that enables sharing of PDF documents in multi-user interfaces. This makes it easier to manage a large group of editors from one work station. With the PitStop Pro 10 editing features being applied on the publishing floor, a publishing manager can track the changes from his office in real time. In addition to central management it also enables creation of action lists along with work spaces and it supports standardization for preflight settings.

Color is a very delicate aspect of printing. PitStop Pro 10 offers an editor a full remapping channel and also enables the editor to customize general application of the color. This is a new feature that is aimed at improving color handling on PDF documents and it is only found in the PitStop Pro 10. Other new feature is the use of PDF/A. This is a feature that enables a PDF editor to preserve a PDF document for use in the future. It helps in backing up when a user is working on many PDF documents at the same time. This latest version of PitStop also makes it possible to view and scroll through PDF documents on the iPad with ease.

The PitStop Server 10 enables optimization of PDF files by reducing the file sizes. It also enables transparency flattening of the document and special color management. Enfocus have designed the PitStop Pro 10 aimed at making production much faster with the last minute editing settings. It is compatible with Adobe Acrobat, Windows 7 and Mac operating systems.

Audio is one of the key components to good quality video, and let’s face it, the built-in microphones in most consumer (and many professional) video cameras are somewhere between crap and garbage. While this problem can usually be avoided by using an external lapel or shotgun microphone, not everyone has access to the equipment, and many consumer cameras do not support external inputs.

In this Adobe Premiere Pro tutorial, I will show you how to clean the hiss and noise from the audio in your Premiere project, by using the integration with Adobe Soundbooth (both are included in the Production Premium and Master Collection).

Video Transcript:

Hey everybody, and welcome to SoftwarMedia TV. My name is Kyle and today I’m going to show you how to use Adobe Soundbooth to reduce the noise in your Premiere Pro project.

So, what you want to do is you want to right-click here. Go to “Edit in Adobe Soundbooth,” “Render and Replace.” This will open up Soundbooth, and it will have your clip in it to edit.

You can hear that.

So what you want to do is you want to highlight your noise, go to “Processes,” “Capture Noise Print”.

Now you want to right-click, go to “Processes” again, “Reduce Noise”.

Make sure that “Use captured noise print” is selected. You can see that it’s already reducing that frequency, and you can mess with the levels here a bit, to get it how you want it.

Hit… save it.

You can X out, go right back into Premiere Pro and your audio is cleaned up.

And it’s that easy.

Rumor has it that Symantec has a removal tool to make deleting the program easier than getting a BSOD in Windows ME. Is it true, or another fantasy like a network printer working upon plugging in the CAT-5 cable? Find out about this and other removal methods Symantec has.

A must in any IT arsenal is the ability to completely remove whatever software is installed on their systems. As anyone in IT can tell you, at times you just need to start over. Removing Symantec Endpoint Protection may be one of those scenarios. Rumor has it that Symantec has a removal tool to make deleting the program easier than getting a BSOD in Windows ME. Is it true, or another fantasy like a network printer working upon plugging in the CAT-5 cable?

How to Troubleshoot Endpoint Errors

The Symantec Endpoint Protection security suite combines antivirus, backup and recovery software. Many businesses use this suite due to the ability it gives users to access corporate networks. System problems such as corrupt files and conflicting applications can affect your Endpoint product’s ability to function properly. If your Endpoint product malfunctions, you can repair it with manual procedures.

Uninstall/Reinstall Option

The first step recommended by Symantec is to perform the common uninstall/reinstall option. This is a simple and, in most situations, an effective method:

Press the “Windows” key. Click “Computer” and select “Uninstall a Program” under “Programs.”

Select the Endpoint product that you wish to repair under the list of installed programs.

Click “Uninstall” and click “Next” at the on-screen prompts to finish the removal process. Restart the PC.

Place the Endpoint installation disc into the computer.

Press the “Windows” key. Click “Computer” and double-click the drive letter that corresponds to the CD-ROM.

Click “Next” at the setup screen. Read and agree to the terms and conditions of the license agreement.

Install the Endpoint product in the “Program Files” folder. Click “Next” at the prompts to complete the installation. Restart the PC.

Launch the Endpoint product and continue with normal use.

CleanWipe Removal Tool Option

There may arise a situation that the above uninstall/reinstall method will not suffice. In those extreme cases, Symantec has a tool in place to completely wipe your hard drive of all traces of Endpoint Protection called CleanWipe. It being a very powerful removal tool, CleanWipe is available only through Symantec itself. Here’s how to request it:

Contact Symantec – Phone: 800-745-6061 Email: Fill out the Symantec email form Chat: Join a live chat session

Inform them you have tried all prior recommended steps (uninstall, reinstall, etc) but now require the CleanWipe removal tool

If the the support engineer isn’t aware of the tool, let them know they can search for details on it through the Symantec internal KB.

Hold on to any case numbers they give for reference. If you do not get any reply after 24-hours, visit Symantec’s forums and post a comment with your case number. Their moderators should get back with you quickly.

Please Note: Symantec recommends using CleanWipe only as the final solution for removal of Endpoint Protection. The proper uninstallation routines should always be tried first. If you haven’t tried the recommended solution already, Symantec will probably require you attempt those methods before sending CleanWipe.

I suppose facial tattoos might do the trick, but something tells me that the general populace favors a less permanent proclamation of individuality.

I was going through some of our older articles today and found Kevin’s older post about VistaKnowledge.com which, sadly, no longer exists. So, I figured it would be a good idea to tell you all about HDWallpapers.net, which features hundreds of free HD desktop backgrounds for Windows 7.

Here are a few of my personal favorites.

Microsoft Forefront delivers end-to-end security and access to information through an integrated line of protection, access and identity management products.

Microsoft Forefront is a comprehensive product line of security products for business customers, and is designed to be centrally managed and integrated into IT infrastructure products, such as Active Directory, and is intended to scale to many thousands of users. As such, Microsoft Forefront security products are distinct from Microsoft consumer-oriented security products, such as Windows Live OneCare, Windows Defender, and the firewalls built into Windows XP and Windows Vista, which are designed to secure stand-alone PCs.

Forefront Security products deliver protection, access, and management solutions, built around user identity and integrated with a highly secure, interoperable platform. Our solutions help to deliver a more contextual and user-centric security solution aligned to the needs of our customers.

Benefits from Forefront

Forefront provides business customers with highly effective security for Microsoft operating systems, applications, and servers. Beyond that, however, Forefront products are designed to work with your Microsoft infrastructure, such as Active Directory (AD), Group Policies, or Windows Update Services. This means that you can manage security service deployment, distribution, configuration, and enforcement across your organization seamlessly. Security management and reporting becomes more centralized in Forefront; its products integrate with System Center solutions and Windows Server Update Services. More centralized collection and analysis of security management information is possible because all security event information is stored in a single SQL Server repository from which events can be identified and interpreted. The common infrastructure obviates the need to deploy unnecessarily redundant infrastructure, speeding deployment and reducing costs. And of course, this minimizes the need for expensive training and retraining of administrative staff in a variety of unrelated management and reporting consoles.

Why should customers choose Forefront Security?

The industry has concentrated its efforts on adding more and more features to existing products or creating new security products, thus multiplying the number and complexity of point solutions. Despite this, business security issues continue to grow, due in large part to the significant operational challenges:

Integrating those security products so they work well together and leverage each other

Integrating them into pre-existing IT infrastructure

Managing and deploying security simply, pervasively, and without mistakes

Managing security as a single solution instead of a bunch of disparate products

Forefront provides a comprehensive family of highly effective security products, but this is only the first step. By concentrating our efforts on the integration and management aspects of security, Forefront products can help prevent misconfiguration, enable organizations to deploy security products more pervasively, and give businesses a unified view into the security state of their networks. In fact, addressing these operational issues makes the network more secure—the configurations are correct, security is deployed where it is needed, and management and reporting are simplified.

Microsoft Forefront goals for business security

Integrate and extend security across the enterprise

Deeply integrates with the identity infrastructure and across the stack

Support for heterogeneous environments

On-premises and hosted solutions for seamless connectivity

Open standards and protocols based identity and security platform

Secure identity-based access products help connect the mobile workforce virtually anywhere

Identity-aware protection help organizations secure information and enable policy-based access

Enable centralized management of the environment and gain critical visibility into the state of the infrastructure

Help improve security and compliance through identity tracking and enforcement throughout the enterprise
