Adobe Acrobat Ten Suite: Your Alternative to Creative Suite?

There was something a little different on tap with the Acrobat release this time around – Acrobat Suite. This is the newest member of the Acrobat family and aside from a very slight annoyance at yet another Adobe edition to sort through, we think this is an incredibly useful and appropriate combination of tools for Acrobat users.

In fact, if your job entails things like frequent presentations and customer facing materials, but you don’t need the other bells and whistles in the full blown Creative Suite, Acrobat Ten Suite could be a cheaper alternative to Creative Suite.

So what’s included in Acrobat Ten Suite?

The base product in this suite is what you’d expect: Acrobat X Pro. The content rich program has everything you need to create the media you need.

The big kicker that is added onto Acrobat in this suite is Adobe Photoshop CS5. It’s a no-brainer that Acrobat users must often use photo editing software to crop, color correct and otherwise edit the content of their PDFs. Those who don’t have Photoshop will find the new content-aware fill feature of particular use. This is one of the most hyped features in the CS5 release because it magically replaces your background when you remove a section of an image.

If you, like many, use PowerPoint presentations on a regular basis, you might find Adobe’s Presenter software, included in Acrobat Ten Suite, of benefit. This plug-in for PowerPoint allows you to narrate, add videos and other forms of interactivity to your presentations.

Screen recording and “elearning” software is becoming more and more widely used (see 13 ways you can use it), and Adobe Captivate is one of the top programs on the market. This complex and robust program is worth $800 alone, and combined with the other offerings in this suite can be priceless to your business.

Multimedia users will appreciate the included Media Encoder CS5, which allows you to to easily convert to Flash and compress high resolution videos into a more manageable sized file.

This has been a big year for Adobe with the launch of CS5 earlier this summer and announcement of a new facility to be built in Salt Lake City. Trend Micro Discovers Another Adobe Vulnerability

Trend Micro detected TROJ_PIDIEF.WIA, a trojan that arrives as a mass email attachment. This trojan may also be downloaded by visiting malicious Web sites. According to Trend Micro’s malware blog, it “uses the heap spray technique to execute shellcode in its stream.” This, in turn, infects your system with the malicious backdoor file, BKDR_POISON.UC, and allows a malicious user to “execute any command on the affected system.”

Adobe will release a patch for this vulnerability on January 12, 2010. In the meantime, protect yourself by disabling JavaScript in Adobe Acrobat.

Under the Edit menu, select Preferences (or use the shortcut key Ctrl+K)
Select JavaScript in the left panel menu.
Uncheck the “Enable Acrobat JavaScript” option.
Hit OK to apply the new settings.

Acrobat.com Moves Out of Beta and Offers Paid Subscriptions

Adobe recently announced some major updates to its popular Acrobat.com service. According to their press release, Adobe has moved Acrobat.com out of beta testing and is now offering two paid subscription services. Since its launch about a year ago, over 5 million people have signed up to use Acrobat.com for sharing documents and online team collaboration.

If you’ve never been to Acrobat.com, it is an online service designed to help people work together on the web. It features online document storage and creation, web meeting and screen sharing tools, document revision and collaboration, and more. Basically Acrobat.com is designed to help business teams get work done in less time, while working together in real time from anywhere in the world.

This move by Adobe into the web-based services arena is just the latest example of how powerful software is increasingly moving from the desktop to web. Subscription services are also becoming more and more prevalent, due to their typically low cost of initial ownership and ability to thwart piracy. Acrobat.com will compete with the upcoming web features in Microsoft Office, as well as offerings from companies like Google and IBM.

While Acrobat.com will still offer a basic, free version of their services, the two subscription levels are aimed at business users that want to take full advantage of its powerful features. The Premium Basic subscription is $14.99 a month or $149 a year, and includes ConnectNow Web meeting capability for up to five users as well as online conversion of 10 documents to PDF per month. The Premium Plus subscription is $39 per month or $390 per year and includes ConnectNow Web meeting capacity for up to twenty users and unlimited online PDF creation.

Acrobat.com also features an Ideas section where users can suggest and test new features. It is a pretty cool online development community that encourages user feedback on the most recent ideas. Upcoming new features include Acrobat.com Tables (a spreadsheet application with group interaction), deeper integration with Adobe and Microsoft products, and social media style updates to track your team’s progress.

Security Updates for Adobe Acrobat 9 and Reader 9

We reported a few weeks ago that Adobe had discovered some critical vulnerabilities in Acrobat and Reader caused by malformed JavaScript in PDF files. This would cause the application to crash and then potentially allow an attacker to gain control of the system.

In this article we offered a temporary fix to the problem, but now Adobe has released an update that is a permanent solution. The update file is rather large, but this is a critical fix and Adobe recommends downloading it immediately. Check out the Adobe Security Bulletin for download links and complete information.

Adobe Acrobat Security Flaws

Adobe recently released a security bulletin regarding a security flaw in Adobe Acrobat 9, Reader 9, and previous versions of both products. Current security breaches are a result of malformed JavaScript in PDF files.

Adobe plans on releasing a critical update in the coming weeks, but in the meantime you should protect your system by taking the simple steps to disable JavaScript in these programs.

To disable JavaScript in Acrobat or Reader:

Select Edit>Preferences
Select the JavaScript Category
Uncheck the ‘Enable Acrobat JavaScript’ option
Click OK

That’s it! You should be protected until the update is released from Adobe.
