Rumor has it that Symantec has a removal tool to make deleting the program easier than getting a BSOD in Windows ME. Is it true, or another fantasy like a network printer working upon plugging in the CAT-5 cable? Find out about this and other removal methods Symantec has.

A must in any IT arsenal is the ability to completely remove whatever software is installed on their systems. As anyone in IT can tell you, at times you just need to start over. Removing Symantec Endpoint Protection may be one of those scenarios. Rumor has it that Symantec has a removal tool to make deleting the program easier than getting a BSOD in Windows ME. Is it true, or another fantasy like a network printer working upon plugging in the CAT-5 cable?

How to Troubleshoot Endpoint Errors

The Symantec Endpoint Protection security suite combines antivirus, backup and recovery software. Many businesses use this suite due to the ability it gives users to access corporate networks. System problems such as corrupt files and conflicting applications can affect your Endpoint product’s ability to function properly. If your Endpoint product malfunctions, you can repair it with manual procedures.

Uninstall/Reinstall Option

The first step recommended by Symantec is to perform the common uninstall/reinstall option. This is a simple and, in most situations, an effective method:

Press the “Windows” key. Click “Computer” and select “Uninstall a Program” under “Programs.”

Select the Endpoint product that you wish to repair under the list of installed programs.

Click “Uninstall” and click “Next” at the on-screen prompts to finish the removal process. Restart the PC.

Place the Endpoint installation disc into the computer.

Press the “Windows” key. Click “Computer” and double-click the drive letter that corresponds to the CD-ROM.

Click “Next” at the setup screen. Read and agree to the terms and conditions of the license agreement.

Install the Endpoint product in the “Program Files” folder. Click “Next” at the prompts to complete the installation. Restart the PC.

Launch the Endpoint product and continue with normal use.

CleanWipe Removal Tool Option

There may arise a situation that the above uninstall/reinstall method will not suffice. In those extreme cases, Symantec has a tool in place to completely wipe your hard drive of all traces of Endpoint Protection called CleanWipe. It being a very powerful removal tool, CleanWipe is available only through Symantec itself. Here’s how to request it:

Contact Symantec – Phone: 800-745-6061 Email: Fill out the Symantec email form Chat: Join a live chat session

Inform them you have tried all prior recommended steps (uninstall, reinstall, etc) but now require the CleanWipe removal tool

If the the support engineer isn’t aware of the tool, let them know they can search for details on it through the Symantec internal KB.

Hold on to any case numbers they give for reference. If you do not get any reply after 24-hours, visit Symantec’s forums and post a comment with your case number. Their moderators should get back with you quickly.

Please Note: Symantec recommends using CleanWipe only as the final solution for removal of Endpoint Protection. The proper uninstallation routines should always be tried first. If you haven’t tried the recommended solution already, Symantec will probably require you attempt those methods before sending CleanWipe.

In this mad world of hackers, cybercriminals and rampant malware, no one -from individuals to businesses- can afford to be unprotected. There are countless protection solutions available, and often it can be difficult to decide on the best internet security for specific needs. For many end-users, firewalls and antivirus programs are ideal, but for those businesses that rely on central servers with many devices connecting at once, endpoint protection is the most likely -and one of the most effective- security solutions available.

Many people are unclear as to what, exactly, endpoint protection entails. Essentially, endpoint protection is security software that is installed on endpoints (individual user devices such as PCs, laptops and handhelds) and centrally managed by the server to which each endpoint connects. The central server/gateway will host the central security program which verifies logins and downloads updates and patches as needed.

Some of the more advanced endpoint protection systems will use network access controls to grant authorizations and limit methods of access to certain devices. When attempting to connect to the network, the central system will determine authorization and ensure that connecting devices are in compliance with access regulations; often this means that devices with unauthorized software such as games and file-sharing programs will be disallowed.

There is a multitude of internet security solutions available on the market today, and choosing the best endpoint protection is often difficult. An excellent product to check out would be Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.

Almost anyone who ever has used a computer -or seen the movie “The Net”- knows what a hacker is, and what it is they generally do. Most people, however, are unaware that not all hackers are malicious digi-ninjas stalking the shadows of cyberspace, ready to infiltrate and steal individuals’ personal information. There exist a great many people who use their prodigious computer skills for what they see as cyber civil-disobedience and righteous sociopolitical reform. These people are known as “Hacktivists.”

Hacktivism -a lovely little portmanteau of hacker and activism- is defined as the practice of promoting a political or social agenda by hacking, especially by defacing or disabling websites.

In one of the more well-known recent instances of cyber-protesting, “Anonymous,” a loose confederation of hackers with ties to the infamous 4chan message boards, launched Denial of Service (DoS) attacks against business giants such as MasterCard and PayPal in retaliation for their perceived betrayal of the popular freedom of information site, WikiLeaks. The attacks were successful in rendering the entire MasterCard website inaccessible for several hours, while disabling only some of the PayPal pages. Read the full news article here.

While DoS attacks are a tangible threat, they are not the only weapon in the hacker arsenal. One of the most prolific causes behind which hacktivists rally is the belief in the fundamental right to freedom of information; battling against censorship and often advocating software piracy. In this modern, digital age, information is one of the most valuable (and most often stolen) commodities around, and hacktivists who seek to use data-mining software to disseminate sensitive or classified information to the public are a significant risk to businesses and organizations.

One of the best ways that a company or organization may protect against hackers and unauthorized access of its sensitive data is through the use of encryption. Internet security programs like Symantec PGP use a combination of hashing, data compression and cryptography to provide encryption, decryption and authentication for data access and communications, making nearly impossible for unauthorized users to access digital information.

While Symantec is a spectacular tool for corporate customers, it might prove unnecessarily complex for smaller businesses or individual home-users who want to protect themselves, but don’t necessarily need all of the advanced features. For smaller-scale consumers who desire exceptional protection from hackers and the like, one option could be the up-and-coming contender in the internet security ring: Bullguard Internet Security.

No matter your personal politics, or whether you believe that hacktivists are digital-age freedom fighters or vengeful cyber-terrorists, one thing that is certain is that hackers in general are a threat to personal and financial security which cannot be ignored. The best way to protect yourself and your personal information is to ensure that -just like your home or business- the doors to your computers and networks are locked tightly, and the only ones who can open them are those to whom you give the key.

Symantec and Bullguard, along with tons of other great deals on discount software, can be found on Softwaremedia.com. Head on over and check it out!
